Commonplace book of Henry James Pye [manuscript], ca. 1770-1800.

A true commonplace book, mainly prose, the many entries consisting chiefly of notes on literary and historical matters, with emphasis upon classical literature. A number of entries concern Shakespeare's plays, being of a critical nature. The volume is a prepared blank-book, with engraved title and printed introduction and skeleton index: Bell's common-place book, form'd generally upon the principles recommended and practised by Mr. Locke (London : for John Bell, 1770). Used in part in writing his Sketches on various subjects, 1796.
